This month, the spotlight is on Ramsbottom. This village in the metropolitan borough of Bury is frequently tipped as one of the best areas in the north to buy property, and for good reason too. So, if you’re house hunting in Ramsbottom, this is the perfect place to start. Enjoy!
Ramsbottom is one of the few locations in the United Kingdom surrounded by lush, fertile scenery, without begin completely isolated from the big cities. Situated just 14 miles from the illustrious city of Manchester, Ramsbottom offers residents a charming slice of northern countryside as well as easy access to the capital of the north. Having gained a reputation for providing the “best of both worlds”, Ramsbottom was officially named as one of the most desirable places to live in in the UK in 2013.
There are six primary schools in Ramsbottom – Stubbins, St Andrews, St Joseph's, Emmanuel Holcombe, Peel Brow and Hazlehurst. Education commissioners have awarded each one of these schools an “outstanding” rating.
Woodhey High (the main secondary school in the area) was classed as “good” in their 2013 Ofsted inspection, with “key indicators for overall attainment and progress have been well above the national average over the past three years.”
Ramsbottom is conveniently positioned for access to Manchester, Bolton and Bury by car. Venture a few miles out of the village and you can find yourself on the M66, M61 or M62. The East Lancashire Heritage Railway - known for its exciting events and activities - also provides easy access into other areas of the north. These include Heywood, Summerseat and Irwell Vale. You can also catch the EL trains to Bury - where services into Manchester are frequent and fast.
As with many other areas in the United Kingdom, the most popular bracket of asking price for properties in Ramsbottom is £100,000 to £200,000. Given the small size of the village and its excellent reputation nationwide, there typically isn’t a wide selection of properties up for grabs at any one time in the area. Essentially, if you’re looking to buy in Ramsbottom, you’ll need to be quick and constantly on the prowl.
According to the Guardian, “there's a whiff of artsiness about Ramsbottom – festivals, good local theatre, etc. – but inclusive artsiness, not that hoity-toity artsiness you get in Other Places.”
The area also swells with tourism during the year. The annual Chocolate Festival, the World Black Pudding Throwing Championship and the December Christmas Festival are just a few of the events visitors flock to the area.
There’s a wide selection of food hubs to grab a bite to eat too, all accompanied by a curious blend of familiar retail shops and obscure shopping outlets. If you’re visiting the area, we’d recommend eating at the Venetian Hideaway, the Eagle & Child (which, according to the Independent, boasts one of the UK’s top 50 Sunday Roasts) or, if you’ve got a sweet tooth, try The Chocolate Café.
However, our recommendation can’t stop there, because there’s so many amazing places to visit. Hearth of the Ram opened in 2012 after a major refurbishment in a 200 year—old building by owner’s Euan & Dena Watkins. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for some delicious tapas, try Levanter – a relaxed and stress free-zone where you can eat and drink, relax and chat.
Ramsbottom’s reputation as a terrific northern location to purchase property in is entirely justified. Conveniently positioned alongside Manchester with excellent transport links and a strong education system, it’s a village that deserves the “desirable location” tag.
